Kay Acken (Dawson)

Kay writes, "50 years is a lot of information so I will try to condense. I married my high school sweetheart Gary Jenkinson, however, unfortunately it did not last. Alas after 2 more failed attempts I have been single now for over 20 years. I do have two wonderful children, and six grandchildren. I managed to move around a bit and have calculated that over the past 50 years I averaged about 6 years in one place counting the states only. North and South California; Las Vegas, Nevada; Tacoma, Washington; Boise, Idaho; back to So California. My vocation varied about as much as my moves, from dental assisting to accounting to software development to database administration. My hobbies have never changed I continue to enjoy sewing and have taken up quilting.

I have retired to Texas to be near one of my children and 3 of my grandchildren. My older sister lives here as well. I love having a sewing room!!!! Woo Hooo and time to sew. You can visit my store and see some of my creations at www.nanasquiltsnstuff.etsy.com"

When I left Campbell High, I enlisted in the U.S. Navy in which I was an aviation mechanic.  Upon the completion of my four year enlistment, I entered San Diego State University and majored in English.  Upon completion of that degree, I taught 6th, 7th and 8th grade social studies.  Then, the acting bug bit me and for the last 35 years I have performed half way around the world, primarily singing in musicals.  I will be performing in New Philadelphia, OH this summer doing the lead role in TRUMPET IN THE LAND, for anyone that happens to be in the area in NE Ohio.  My career took me from San Diego, CA to New York, NY.  From there I performed all over the United States and throughout Europe.  I am married and have a son,who lives in Utah with his wife and seven children.  My passions are singing professionally and playing golf...non-professionally.

From there I moved to the San Francisco Theological Seminary where I worked for 8 years. Now, I am living in Oregon, having moved here in 2004. I brought my sweet mother up here and she passed away in 2006. I am trying to decide what to do next in my life. Is anyone else trying to figure that out? My brother, Jack, (class of 1959) is still living on the big island of Hawaii. I am delighted that the big re-union is being planned for 2011. Blessings to all."

(Jump to Don's yearbook photo page. Use "back" button to return to this page.)

After graduation day in June of 1961, I didn't take much time hanging around Campbell. Monday morning I was off to "Boot Camp" in San Diego followed by Submarine School in New London, Conn. By November 61' I was cruising the North Atlantic off Russia, 500 feet underwater, on the SSBN Patrick Henry, one of the first nuclear powered Polaris subs. Today its hard for me to see this 18-year-old kid at the helm of a mammoth war machine, but my initial life into manhood was good and adventurous to say the least! - I found out that the only thing wrong with submarines was I was seeing the world through a periscope!!, but no complaints as I loved my tour of duty in the Navy. Being a water rat since high school (I was taught well by Coach Leonard Scroggins) I went to Navy Dive School and became the ships diver. Navy life became better when I was transferred to a WWII submarine, the USS Tigrone - SS419, where I spent the last 6 months in the Navy cruising the Mediterranean !
Sea. Click to READ MORE from Don

I haven't roamed very far from this area since I moved here from LA to Saratoga for 7th grade. I have lived in Sunnyvale since 1972. I graduated in dental hygiene in 1965 from UCSF and continue to work. After 37 years of marriage I lost my husband, Glenn, unexpectedly from a heart attack while he was jogging in 2006. We raised two beautiful daughters, Carole and Joanne. Carole made me a grandma for the first time when Ryland was born in April 2009 - a real joy. They are doing post docs in research at UCSD. Joanne has been in NYC for the past 8 years where she runs her own business in recruiting.  Like everyone else through the years, I've traveled to some wonderful places, enjoying sweet moments of life and tolerating the bad ones.

John writes, "I left Campbell in Oct 1960. actually graduated from University High School at Southern Illinois University. I escaped Illinois and made it back to Campbell for the Class of '61 graduation where I sat high in the bleaches and cheered you all on (with a little help from a cool jug of screwdrivers). Then Dave Leefeldt and I joined the Navy, I served twenty, Dave, not so much. While in the Navy I made nine Deterrent Patrols on FBM Submarines. Twenty years in weapons system electronics pretty well limits a guys opportunities after retirement so I remained in the electronics field after Navy retirement. Now I'm really retired and kickin' back, I spend most of my time playing internet poker. I would dearly love to make the 5oth reunion, but I doubt that will be possible...........J.R"

Here is a quick look at my life since Campbell High. After attending Westmont College in Santa Barbara and graduating from San Jose State, I taught school in the Oak Grove School District in San Jose for 30+ years. I lived in Saratoga for 5 years, then moved to Los Gatos, then Monte Sereno where I live now, just five miles from Campbell High.

In 1999 during the dot com 'bubble' I became fascinated by learning HTML that produces websites that can be seen by the world, so I decided to opt out of teaching to become a web designer. I attended West Valley Community College where I obtained a degree in digital media. I established a small company, Nicerpage Web Design. This Campbell 61 website was one of my early projects.

I have one daughter who lives nearby; her husband is a world musician. My husband is a corrosion engineer who grew up in New York and attended school in Pittsburgh: CMU, for which he recruits students. He also plays timpani in the Saratoga Symphony and he is president ("for life") of our bicycle racing club.
